Located some 5 km southeast of the Galle town is the Unawatuna beach. It is situated not next to the main road, like so many other parts of the Southern beach, but somewhat away from the hustle and bustle of the busy Galle-Matara main road. This makes it an ideal location for the peace loving tourist to have a quite dip in the great blue ocean.
This is a paradise built for the young, as many youth from around the world come here to spend a few days on the white sands under the golden sunshine. At night one can grab a cool beer from a seaside restaurant and feel against the cold breeze that sweeps across the Indian Ocean. The reefs make this a safe swimming spot but at the same time not so good for those who are ever watchful for strong currents to surf.

There are many small hotels and restaurants in Unawatuna, making it one of the largest tourist attractions in the Southern coast. There are many night clubs that come alive during night time and many small restaurants that serve many tasty sea food dishes for very affordable rates. This is a great place for anyone who wishes to spend a few days in the Southern part of the country, to explorer the Galle fort and the Rumassala Mountain.
One can get to Unawatuna in three main ways. The quickest among them is through the Southern Express Highway that takes about 2 hours from Colombo. If you happen to take the train or use the Colombo-Galle main route, it is going to take about 3 hours.
There are many legends and historical importance to this place. However for the general traveler, this is a paradise with sun, sand and beach. In your stay here in Sri Lanka, make sure you spend at least a day or two in this lovely place, walking the sandy beaches against the cold breeze, along the night sky and a rim of lights from the tiny restaurants along the beach.
